Short description of project

Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
The primary objective of this project is to take advantage of the green aspect of biocatalysis for the design and synthesis of new chiral 2-hydroxy ketones, and iminocyclitols with high pharmaceutical potential using enzymatic carboligation and micro-reactor technology. Process intensification based on micro-devices is a new concept in chemical engineering which aims reducing capital and energy costs along with the environmental impact by reducing the size of the chemical plant, and this project will be the first approach using micro-reactor technology for TDEs and FSA, which both will take advantages of these new reactor concept. Integration of biocatalysts in industrial processes and reaction enzyme engineering using micro-reactors are the top research priorities. Therefore, the evaluation of micro-reactors as an appropriate tool for rapid screening of enzyme activity and production of chiral 2-hydroxy ketones and iminocyclitols is one of the major project objectives. Some emerging issues that restrict FSA are expected to be optimized in a micro-reactor, which can effectively perform the screening of reactions without the use of large amounts of substrate and enzyme. A higher capacity micro-reactor to produce sufficient product for analysis should be achieved by multiplication of each micro-structured units (known as „numbering-up“).The key output of the project will be a new enzyme technology leading to valuable chiral compounds and may be the first process that was developed in industrial biotechnology, which would use aldolases. Isolation of the product could be a problem, but with strong links to "Bioglane" who has experience from the production standpoint, this problem could be brought under control. As the topic of this proposal is currently of significant interest in the world in both academic and industrial research, there will be many opportunities to promote and advertise the work in scientific publications, on international conferences and web sites.
