Short description of project
Objective: The GN2 project sets out a programme of work to further develop the successful GN1 project, which has created the GEANT pan-European network. GN2 will continue and improve on the current network, with specific emphasis on developing an "end-to-end" approach to the provision of service across multiple interconnected networks. Gaining an improved understanding of user needs, as well as measures to provide direct support to deal with performance issues, are major elements of the proposal. It is anticipated that the current network architecture, based purely on IP service, will evolve to a more flexible structure based on a combination of routing and switching. This will build on current experimentation with the management of light paths and the emergence of standards for network control. The geography of the network will be expanded to include Turkey and Bulgaria and the current global interconnections will be enhanced. In parallel with the development of the network, a comprehensive set of Joint Research Activities is defined, which are designed to provide future network enhancements. The initial JRAs deal with performance measurement, resource allocation mechanisms, network security and mobility. The JRAs will be able to exploit a distributed test facility that will be provided as an adjunct to the GN2 network. These JRAs will involve technical experts from the NREN community, DANTE and TERENA. A programme of networking activities is also defined where a specific activity has been designated for the co-ordination of RTD work in GN2. It is expected that new JRAs, resulting from this, will be defined and carried out during the lifetime of GN2. As well as a comprehensive set of measures to disseminate the results of GN2 to a wide audience, it is planned to provide an enhanced level of support and assistance to users. The project will be carried out by the consortium of European NRENs, together with TERENA, and with DANTE as the coordinating partner.
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
SRCE participates as the Third Party on GN2 project. SRCE experts have among other duties been responsible for eduroamSA- an activity aimed at establishing and securing a permanently reliable service eduroam in Europe.
