Short description of project
Pramenka sheep breeds are dominant in sheep production in countries of Southeaster Europe. Main advantage of local Pramenka sheep breeds regarding introduced sheep breeds is their adaptability to production environment (size, resistance, modesty). Local Pramenka sheep breeds are therefore in southeaster parts of Europe production competitive in a small scale farms with low input-low output systems. Beside of economic importance local sheep breeds support preservation of entire agro-biodiversity. Traditional production technologies adjusted to breed and environment support preservation of cultural heritage of region. Pramenka sheep breeds have a lot of common exterior and production characteristic (body size, constitution, fleece, milk production, fertility). Important similarities among breeds support assumption that local Pramenka sheep breeds of southeaster Europe countries belong to identical group, i.e. that some of local sheep breeds is possible to regionally associate to one another (regional transboundary breeds) because they are filogenetically very close. Breeding goals some of southeast Europe local sheep breeds (introduction of Merino breeds) through last centuries caused certain exterior and production aberration from basic Pramenka characteristics, giving to breeds genetic identity that needs to be preserve. Therefore is necessary to combine former knowledge about characteristics of local sheep breeds from southeast Europe in order to create strategies for their preservation within Pramenka sheep breeds, considering regional distribution, population size and trends, exterior, production and genetic feature, specific characteristics (resistance, adaptability), production technologies and historical writings. Gathered information will be base for creation of preservation strategy, design of the conservation schemes, experience exchange and implementation of regional collaboration. Regional strategies for preservation Pramenka sheep breeds will decrease lose of genetic variability in southeaster Europe.
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
ð      make a inventarisation of local Pramenka sheep breeds on local (national) and regional level; ð      overview of the characteristics of the particular Pramenka sheep breeds (describing of origin, morphological and production traits), traits of adaptive and economic importance; ð      overview of the country’s conservation strategies, breeding support and schemes (identification, performance recording, breeding programs, …); ð      overview of the country’s sheep production systems and traditional technology; ð      to achieve optimum production levels a good understanding of the breed characteristic and current performance level is necessary.
