Short description of project
Loss of soil organic carbon and leaching of nutrients are main problems in the Croatian agriculture. As far as the Kyoto protocol (target: a decrease of greenhouse gasses) and the Cross Compliance (Council Regulation EC 1782/2003) (target: maintaining soil fertility by Good Agricultural Practice) are concerned, control and monitoring the soil organic carbon losses would be a very positive step in the frame of a sustainable agriculture and EU-membership. Tackling the problems about nitrate leaching is necessary to fulfill the requirements of the Nitrate Directive (91/676/EU), which is obligatory for all the EU member states (target: decrease or prevention of water pollution).
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
- Exchange of expertise between Flanders and Croatia on development of appropriate procedures for collecting data on soil samples (sampling, analysis, quality control and data reporting) and on good agricultural practice in this context. - Commitment of one pilot farm in 3 agricultural regions: Varazdinska County, Osjecko-Baransjka County and Vukovarsko County. On each farm a selection of parcels will be sampled yearly to measure carbon and nitrate in the soil. These samples will be analysed by the Faculty of Agriculture (Zagreb) and ILVO (Merelbeke) to compare the methods of analysis. The relation between the data of analysis and the climatic conditions and management of the parcel will be investigated. - A manual will be developed to describe the organization and methodology of soil sampling, preparation and conservation, the methods of analysis, data reporting and the systems of internal quality control and the interlaboratory control. - Training of colleagues from Croatia. They will be trained for sampling, analysis and quality control in the laboratory and in the field in Flanders. - Study visits in both countries give the opportunity to the partners to know the state of the art in this matter and to take account of the specific characteristics of the areas concerned, the existing farming systems and the experience of partners - Interlaboratory tests between Croatian laboratories (7) will be organized in the first year by ILVO (Flanders)(experienced in this way of working) and will be introduced in Croatia in the second year by the Faculty of Agriculture Zagreb. The Faculty will organize this ringtest in the third year autonomously.
