The aim of the project is to define diatom, especially centric, and dinoflagellate species composition in large rivers and reservoirs of Hungary and Croatia. Diatom and dinoflagellates assemblages in relation to environmental factors and ecological status of the waters will be of concern due to particular nature of rivers and reservoirs in the two mentioned East-Central European countries (Hungary and Croatia). According to the recent advances in the taxonomy, detailed taxonomic studies of these groups are required to make true and complete picture of diatom and dinofalgellete diversity. Selection of particular karstic and soft waterbodies, rivers and reservoirs, rivers and barrage karstic lakes will provide comparable study sites and representative material for comparative studies to confirm whether or not the species identified with the same names in the two countries are really the same. The distribution of the coincident species in relation to habitats and environmental conditions in the two countries will be studied to detect the species more appropriate as bioindicators.
