Short description of project
The objective of the TRACES research project is to contribute to a better understanding of the psychosocial processes of coping and symbolic reconstruction of communitarian frameworks, within the generation of young adults massively exposed to the traumatic experiences of war. The theme of transition to adulthood in a post war context is at the core of this research. This stage is crucial in the life of an individual as it will have a long standing impact on his/her direction and will influence the system of beliefs and values in relation to the person's community. At the same time, the project aims to describe the collective experiences which have affected populations in former Yugoslavia during the armed conflict decade, from 1991 to 2001, and questions the consequences of massive violations of the most fundamental rights in war-torn communities, in particular their capacity to organize life in society around common principles of justice and legitimate institutions promoting the implementation of these principles. The research project, structured in five thematic modules, is based on two extensive, partially overlapping, surveys. The first one, entitled « contextual survey », which covers 80 regions, is situated in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia, and allows to make inferences on the collective experiences within the overall adult population in ex-Yugoslavia. The second, entitled « individual survey », was obtained by a sample partially included in the first, but is based specifically on the birth cohort 1968-74. This interdisciplinary research mobilizes a network of researchers in the social sciences department of the University of Lausanne and of the Universities of Belgrade, Zadar and Zagreb, as well as the department of educational sciences « G.M. Bertin » of the University of Bologna. Social psychologists, sociologists and demographers of PAVIE collaborate closely with Serbian and Croatian colleagues to analyze the data. The goal of the scientific collaboration is to disseminate, in Switzerland, a better understanding of living conditions and societal issues within the countries of ex-Yugoslavia, and encourage similar research projects in the field. The results of this research will be presented at the beginning of 2009, during an international and interdisciplinary meeting organized in Lausanne, during which research outcomes will be presented to the scientific community as well as the lay people, interested in the possible practical applications of this knowledge. Moreover, the scientific network's activities should result in the publication of a book combining the different contributions.
