Short description of project
Sustainable protection of animal genetic resources is based on a balancing of maximum-diversity and maximum-utility strategy. In this way, genetic variability is trying to be preserved, as well as raising the competitiveness of breeds. Improving the competitiveness of native and protected breeds, particularly through the traditional technology makes them less vulnerable and sustainable in long-terms (i.e. less dependent on government subsidies). Development of sustainable breeding programs of transboundary breeds should consider the interaction of national breeding strategy, in order to be properly developed production features, preserved adaptability and genetic originality, and maintained genetic variability of breeds. Rationalization of costs of breeding (consevations) programs can be achieved through regional coordination of responsible breeding institutions and experts, through the distribution of responsibilities, exchange of information, ideas and genetic material. Finding and establishing the model of information flow and strengthening the regional cooperation, is necessary to protect all, particularly the regional breeds. New technologies allow the creation of networks of institutions and experts, the regional database of AnGR, through which effective and quick exchange of information and experiences will be done. This facilitates the preservation of breed diversity, exchange of genetic material, creating a sustainable breeding programs, and crisis action plans, adjustment of legislation and other. Current results of ERFP project 'Study of origin and conservation strategy of the Pramenka sheep breeds as regional transboundary breeds' indicate the need for immediate establishment of cooperation between experts and optimizing breeding programs of transboundary (Karakachanska sheep, Bardoka, Istrian sheep) and other breeds. The proposed project seeks to design a model of closely and continued cooperation between national experts, institutions and breeders in optimizing sustainable breeding (conservation) program for transboundary and other breeds.
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
analysis of national breeding strategy for transboundary breeds (example: Karakachanska sheep, Bardoka, Istrian sheep); creating regional network of experts, services, breeding and other institutions in order to strengthen the cooperation to establish a sustainable breeding programs for regional and other native breed; strengthening the importance of national Focal Point institutions as well as functions of the National Coordinator
