The project will be focused on the characterization of polymer materials for food packaging. The objective of this research work is to understand the molecular mechanism of gas (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen) transport through the thin polymer films used in food industry. Particularly, commercially available films, mostly polyethylene and polypropylene films, will be tested on gas permeability after being exposed to the external factors such as mechanical force, accelerated thermal ageing, irradiation, pH change, humidity (food simulants influence such as ethanol and acetic acid). Such investigations have a direct application in food industry for packaging of liquid and solid products.
