The mechanical analysis of some important historic structures from Austrian and Croatian architectural heritage is carried out, in order to reveal the state of stress and displacements in certain phases of their building and in certain circumstances (loading). After a relatively time-consuming modelling, the computational finite element mechanical analysis enables a fast analysis of different structural solutions (by a simple change of the observed structural parameters). Numerous «virtual experiments» enable contemporary engineers to approach structural problems «empyrically», exactly as the ancient master-builders did.
