Friction is non-linearity that is inherent to many automotive subsystems. Control of systems with friction is quit complex and requires faithful models and estimators of friction characteristics. In our research we will be mostly concerned with: Improvement of existing and development of new friction models with application to key automotive components such as tire, clutches and brakes. Robust real-time estimation of important friction parameters and variables using advanced techniques (e.g. neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms). Applications of the above results to improve the control of automotive systems with friction such as automatic transmission shift and engagement, ABS and traction control. Experimental validation of the above models, estimation techniques and control systems.
