The project consists of the study of the distribution of the Dinophyta flora in a great part of large rivers, their reservoirs, and lakes of Hungary and Croatia, in relation to environmental factors, especially those related with the ecological status of the waters. Important recent advances in the taxonomy of this group make it necessary to identify the taxa occurring in a broad range of conditions in both countries properly, and with detailed taxonomic studies. Parallel to algal sampling, at the field, physical and chemical parameters will be measured (transparency, temperature, oxygen, pH, conductivity, current velocity). Computer data analysis would correlate algal communities and physical and chemical parameters to define their interaction with ecological conditions change. The goals of proposed project are: (i) to define composition of dinoflagellate species depending on different ecological conditions, (ii) to find out which species in correlation to nutrients, current velocity and temperature significantly indicate change of ecological status in defined biotope, (iii) development of usable method in biological and ecological valorization of water resources, (iv) study the patterns of distribution of the coincident species in relation to habitats and environmental conditions and detect species that are appropriate as bioindicators, (v) base for „Monograph of the Dinophyta Species, (vi) in graduate and postgraduate curriculums and education, (vii) base for WFD/EU.
